It’s been a decade since a U.S. Open Cup match was played on City Island in Harrisburg and while the match scheduled for October 11 is a qualifier and not part of the Open Cup “proper” it’s another step in re-establishing soccer’s presence in Pennsylvania’s capital city.

The UPSL team Capital City Islanders will host Maryland-based MoCo 1776 FC in a second round qualifier at Skyline Sports Complex on October 11 at 7 p.m.

The last Open Cup match played on City Island was on May 27, 2015. The City Islanders lost the match 3-1 in extra time to Rochester Rhinos, which went on to take the Philadelphia Union to a penalty shootout, which they lost 3-1.

The Capital City Islanders match is one of three with local significance in the second round of qualifying for the 2026 competition.

United Soccer League of PA rivals Vereinigung Erzgebirge and Colonial SC meet the same Saturday afternoon in Warminster at 2:30 p.m. while Oaklyn United hosts Scots-American Athletic Club (Kearney, N.J.) at Rowan University that Sunday night, October 12, at 6 p.m.

Capital City (3-2-1) is currently third in the Northeastern American standings. Philadelphia Lone Star is on top of the standings with four wins out of four.
