Ernst Tanner suspended without pay through June 1
Philadelphia Union Sporting Director Ernst Tanner has been suspended without pay through June 1, 2026, following the completion of a league investigation into allegations of workplace misconduct.
The investigation conducted by law firm Littler Mendelson “substantiated violations of MLS policies and standards of professional conduct required of League and Club leadership,” according to a news release from MLS on Monday afternoon.
Tanner, who was placed on leave following a report in The Guardian that found additional details not in the league’s initial investigation, is required to complete a “League-approved restorative practices program” prior to any reinstatement.
Philadelphia Union Academy director Jon Scheer will assume the Sporting Director role on an interim basis during Tanner’s suspension, according to a news release from the team.
“Based on the findings from Major League Soccer’s investigation, the Philadelphia Union supports the league’s disciplinary action and restorative practices program for Sporting Director Ernst Tanner,” a team statement reads. “The Union will evaluate the best and appropriate structure for the organization following the disciplinary process.”
Allegations against Tanner, who has been with the club since 2018, include racist, sexist and homophobic comments as well as inappropriate physical contact with a team employee. The initial investigation was closed after the allegations in the complaint could not be corroborated.
Tanner has denied the allegations detailed in The Guardian report.
“I regret the impact that this situation has had on the Philadelphia Union organization and its supporters,” a statement from Tanner reads. “I remain proud of my work with the Philadelphia Union and look forward to my return and future work with the team.”
