Temple shuts down St. Joe’s for second straight win

Joonas Jokinen’s second goal of the season in the 67th minute broke a stalemate and held up as the game-winner for Temple in their first Philly Soccer Six derby match in their new facility near campus.

The Owls came out firing in the first half on a warm Sunday afternoon with 10 shots, but were unable to break through a disciplined Hawks back line until Jorge Gomez Sanchez slid a pass to Jokinen down the right side and the junior from Finland did the rest.

Gomez Sanchez added a penalty kick in the 81st minute, his second from the spot on the year to go with two assists.

Hawks junior goalkeeper Greg O’Connell did well in just his second career appearance, turning away four shots in a game that saw the home side outshoot the visitors 19-5.

Senior defender Mike Stuski had the Hawks’ lone shot on goal, but it was saved by Temple ‘keeper Alex Cagle, who picked up his second straight clean sheet to start the season.

Freshmen Ramzi Saim and Daryus Lake both made their college debuts in the starting XI for the Hawks in their season opener.

The match was the second at the new Temple Sports Complex off Broad and Master streets and drew a crowd of 1,047. Through two games, the Owls have already outdrawn the total attendance figure from all of last season out in Ambler.

Delgado goal gives Delaware a 2-0 start
Guillermo Delgado’s third goal of the weekend lifted the Blue Hens to their second straight win to start the season on Sunday.

The senior, who is now only seven away from the all-time program record for goals, buried his 40th career goal in the 20th minute.

West Chester native Todd Morton was tested only once by the Fordham attack, making one save to register his second clean sheet of the season.

An 81st-minute goal sunk the Mountain Hawks on Sunday in the final game of the JMU Invitational.

The Big South favorites found the breakthrough off the head of sophomore forward Sivert Daehlie, who led the team with 13 goals last season.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jacob Gottwald made four saves in the loss.
