Eight Philadelphia Union players named to All-Star ballot

This year the MLS adopted a new policy that eight players from each team will be nominated, giving us a total of 176 possible players to select for the 2017 MLS All Star Team set to play Spanish giants, Real Madrid. Today, the ballots were released and the Union had a fairly balanced eight selected. Goalkeeper Andre Blake was selected for the ballot and should he win the fan vote, would be on the team for the second year in a row. Defenders Fabinho and Oguchi Onyewu were selected from the Union’s backline after having standout performances across multiple games this season. The Union’s midfield was highly represented, as half of the nominations are from the Union’s talented midfielders. Defensive midfielder Derrick Jones, expert passer Haris Medunjanin and captain Alejandro Bedoya have all earned their first nominations while veteran winger Chris Pontius also secured a nomination. The last spot has gone to forward CJ Sapong as he has led the team in scoring with 8 goals this season, including the team’s third ever hat-trick against the New York Red Bulls.

For the time being, the voting process is being done exclusively through the MLS App, and then on June 3rd, it will open up on the MLS website. Users may vote once a day and every ballot cast will be entered to win a fan trip to the All Star game in Chicago. To see the full list of 176 players, click here.
