Local Soccer Notebook 6/2/17

Former Philadelphia Union forward and Princeton University graduate Antoine Hoppenot was named USL player of the week for his efforts scoring three goals in two games for Reno 1868 FC. Former Bethlehem Steel FC defender Mickey Daly was in the team of the week and Steel FC forward Cory Burke made the bench.

Seattle Sounders 2 defender Brian Nana-Sinkam (Lancaster, Pa.) scored his second of the season in a 2-2 draw with Sacramento Republic FC on Sunday.

Reading United midfielder Hugo Delhommelle checks in at No. 8 and  Jorge Guinovart is 30th in the Premier Development League’s first Top 50 prospects list. A pair of Ocean City Nor’easters players also made the list – Nikola Fimic (No. 9) and Ignacio Tellechea (No. 20). Greenville, Delaware native and Salesianum School alumnus Ben Lundgaard is No. 12 on the list.

Reading United midfielder Mo Adams (Syracuse) was in training and got to play for Bethlehem Steel FC in a scrimmage against the Philadelphia Union at Talen Energy Stadium on Wednesday.

Villanova defender Sean Teixeira (New York Red Bulls U23) made the PDL Team of the Week.

Villanova will host Big East foe and 2016 NCAA Tournament cinderella Providence on October 28. The Friars have seven fifth-year seniors on their roster including standouts Mac Steeves and Dominik Machado returning from injury.

Penn State released their fall 2017 schedule, which includes a visit to Temple on September 27.

Pittsburgh midfielder Ryan Mertz has committed to play soccer at the University of Delaware this fall, joining Continental FC teammates Kexxer Camarco and Ryan Trapp, Ryan Calhoun and Ryan Peterson as members of the incoming recruiting class.

Eleven area clubs won their boys divisions at the 18th annual FC Delco Players Cup over Memorial Day Weekend. Continental FC boys teams won the U10 Championship, U11 Championship, U16 Bronze and U12 Platinum while North Union United (U10 Elite, U12 Elite) and Penn Fusion (U12 Championship, U15 Championship) teams each captured two. Keystone Athletic (U18 Elite), PA Classics (U19 Championship), Philadelphia Coppa (U9 Elite), HMMS Eagle FC United (U10 Premier), Boyertown SC (U11 Premier), Fishtown AC (U11 Platinum), Southern Chester County SA (U12 Premier) and Washington United (U17 Gold) also finished on top of their respective divisions.

The U.S. Soccer Development Academy released the 2017-18 schedules for both the Boys and Girls Academy. The Union begin with games against Cedar Stars Academy and Lehigh Valley United on September 2 while Continental opens the same day with games against D.C. United and Players Club of Tampa Bay and PA Classics plays Richmond United.

Continental FC’s U18 team drew Players Development Academy 1-1 on Saturday. Gabriel Ivins scored the equalizer in the 75th minute after a 4th minute own goal. The U16s fell 4-3 to PDA. RJ Palonis had a brace and Jeremy Rafanello added a goal to put Continental up 3-1 but Nigel Griffith, Zach Riviere and Dantouma Toure each scored goals in the final 10 minutes to grab the victory. Rafanello has scored in four straight games and leads the team with 20 goals.

PA Classics picked up a 2-1 win over BW Gottschee Academy in the U18 game (goals by Justin Jaime and Nick Kramer), but fell 5-0 in the U16 game on Sunday.
