Local Soccer Notebook: 10/12/17

Brazilian legend Kléberson returned to Philadelphia over the summer to take a job coaching for the Philadelphia Union Academy and Pre-Academy at YSC Sports.

Over the weekend, his son Kléberson Pareira made his debut for the academy, playing for the Union U15s in the first of their three Generation adidas Cup regional matches. He also converted a PK in a penalty shootout lost to Atlanta United after a 1-1 draw and played again in Monday’s 8-0 over Orlando City.

Kléberson wasn’t the only player making his debut for the Union. Patrick Bohui, a forward from Cotre d’Ivoire who joined the residency program from Harrisburg over the summer scored three goals. Bohui is still waiting for international paperwork to clear to be eligible for the league play in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy.

The GA Cup qualifiers also marked the return to the area of Atlanta United Academy defender/midfielder George Campbell. The younger brother of Philadelphia Union Academy grads Will Campbell (a defender at North Carolina) and Robert Campbell (a defender at Clemson), George is in his second season with Atlanta after joining from Georgia United last season. The Campbell family moved to Atlanta in 2013.

One of the top goalkeeping instructors in the U.S. will be honored by his alma mater on October 21. A 1987 graduate from Saint Joseph’s University, Tim Mulqueen has coached the likes of Kasey Keller, Marcus Hahnemann, Brad Guzan and Tony Meola and is credited with helping to launch the career of Tim Howard.

Mulqueen was a starter at St. Joe’s for three seasons and also spent a season playing on the basketball team. He ranks in the top 10 all-time in saves, goals against average and shutouts.

He’ll be honored at halftime of the game at Sweeney Field against VCU. Prior to the match, there will also be a brief memorial in honor of former head coach Jack Ruggero.

Archmere Academy entered their game at Talen Energy Stadium this week with heavy hearts having just lost teammate Anthony Penna to injuries sustained in a head-on collision. So it was understandable that they were a little emotional after a 1-0 win behind Penn Fusion Academy midfielder Andrew Rosenbaum’s goal in the 68th minute.

Philadelphia Ukrainian Nationals 2003 boys were the champions of the EDP Fall Cup and were recently ranked No. 1 in the nation by GotSoccer.com.

Pat McCarthy (Cinnaminson, N.J.), the younger brother of Union goalkeeper John McCarthy, had himself quite a night on Wednesday. With the score tied 3-3, he scored twice in a 1:41 span to give the Explorers the 5-3 win just before the end of regulation. Matt Robinson (Lansdale, Pa.) had a hat trick in the game to bring his season total to seven to go along with seven assists.

Philadelphia Union Academy grad Justin McMaster scored his first college goal in a 8-0 blowout over Longwood. The freshman from Jamaica has a goal and three assists in 10 games and one start for the Demon Deacons.

Fellow academy grad Jerren Nixon recorded the first point of his career with an assist in a 4-2 win for Virginia over Lehigh, which got a goal and an assist from Mark Forrest (Douglassville, Pa.) to bring his season tally to nine goals and five assists. Academy grad Doyle Tuvesson (Kennet Square, Pa.) has a pair of goals and eight assists for Lehigh this season. His assist total is good enough for a tie for fifth place in Division 1.

Another academy grad, Sebastian Elney, scored another game-winner for Maryland to beat Ohio State last Friday. The goal is his fourth of the season; all four have been game-winners.

West Chester moved into 13th in the United Soccer Coaches Division 2 poll after upsetting local rival Millersville and improving to 8-2-1 on the season. Millersville went from 11th to 22nd in the rankings and that was before a loss to Jefferson at home on Tuesday.

Messiah moved up two spots to third In the Division III men’s poll while Rowan moved up four spots to sixth. Union Academy grad Isaiah Holquist (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) and the University of Chicago fell from No. 1 to 14th after suffering their first loss of the season. On the women’s side, the College of New Jersey remained at No. 3, Messiah was seventh, Rowan 17th and Swarthmore 23rd.

Former Philadelphia Union homegrown Cristhian Hernandez, who won the National Premier Soccer League championship with Elm City Express in August, is now playing third division soccer in Mexico with Coras FC.

Reno 1868 FC defender Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa.), Richmond Kickers goalkeeper Travis Worra (Lancaster, Pa.) and Bethlehem Steel FC midfielder Santi Moar all made the USL Team of the Week.

Philly Soccer Six Weekly Awards went to Temple defender Mark Grasela (Philadelphia, Pa.), who scored two goals in a win over Drexel, Saint Joe’s defendere Eddie McCusker (Washington Township, N.J.) for defense and Temple forward Alan Camacho Soto for rookie of the week after scoring the game-winning goal to beat Drexel.
