Philadelphia Union, Toronto FC in violation of mass confrontation policy

The Philadelphia Union has been cited for violating the league’s Mass Confrontation Policy by the MLS Disciplinary Committee for the second time this season following an incident with Toronto FC on Saturday.

Toronto FC was also cited for the violation while head coaches Bradley Carnell and Robin Fraser were both issued official warnings.

The altercation occurred int he 77th minute after Union defender Olwethu Makhanya fired a shot at Toronto goalkeeper Luka Gavran after the whistle had blown. Union goalkeeper Andre Blake, midfielder Quinn Sullivan and forward Mikael Uhre were issued fines for “inciting and/or escalating a mass confrontation” along with Toronto defender Richie Laryea and midfielder Deybi Flores.

The Union were previously cited for an incident in their 1-0 loss at Nashville for a dust up between players after a straight red was shown to Jonathan Perez for a high boot on Tai Baribo.
