West Chester Henderson outlasts Emmaus in scoreless draw and PK shootout

The Quakertown Community High School pitch morphed into a theater for defensive prowess as West Chester Henderson advanced in a penalty-kick thriller in PIAA boys soccer playoffs on Saturday night.

“Throughout my Henderson career, we’ve kind of always been an attacking dominant team, but coming into this year we knew it was going to be something different,” Henderson senior goalkeeper Dylan Arrison said following the penalty shootout win. “We knew we weren’t going to be winning games 4-0 or 5-0; we knew there was going to be a couple of closer games.”

Though Saturday’s contest lacked any goals in 100 minutes of play, tensions remained high as the crowd witnessed plenty of close opportunities. The Warriors back line of Nate Lee (senior), Dillon Cronin (senior), Caden Quinn (senior), and Chase Reitnour (sophomore) all held their own in the first 40 as no legitimate scoring opportunities from Emmaus presented.

This continued throughout most of the second half with Nate Lee standing out as a clear leader in the back line as he and his fellow defensemen were given little breaks. They remained resilient through waves of Emmaus attacks.

However, a plethora of cards in the second half and overtime periods allowed for danger to creep into Henderson territory. At one point in the match, head coach Chas Wilson was forced to send in a lineup consisting of 4 former junior varsity players due to a pair of yellow cards on senior CDM Ben Bailey and senior CDM Jack Overton (captain). Junior midfielder Jake Brogan (captain) was given a soft red card earlier as well.

The yellow card on Bailey sent him off the pitch and set up a dangerous set piece right outside of the 18 for the Hornets with the scoreboard showing a minute 30 remaining in the first overtime period. This took place with the absence of two highly regarded players in Brogan and  Bailey. The attempt rebounded hard off the center of the crossbar and remained in Henderson territory for roughly a minute following the free kick.

The efforts of Arrison, the back line, senior winger Ralph Mendoza, senior winger Zach Scott-Smith, and freshman midfielder Kieran Hughes were huge in the minutes of heavy absence.

“It’s not a game of soccer when it’s a deadlock for that long,” Overton said. “It’s whose effort dies out first and who cracks first.”

The looming deadlock at zero a piece after two periods of overtime action warranted a PK shootout where coach Wilson rolled out a kicking 5 with 2 of its members having spent the entire fall on the Warriors JV squad. Though it would decide whose season continues, this shootout had a little more meaning to it than it presented at surface level.

A little over a week ago, The Warriors lost the District 1 semifinal in a PK shootout to Haverford where only Brogan and Overton converted. The only returners to this shootout were Overton and Arrison who missed against the Fords.

Overton and Arrison, along with sophomore midfielders Carter Lee, Lucas Whittle and sophomore Parker Nesbitt all made up the squad that reentered the turf for PKs with hopes of sending the Warriors to a game further than they reached last year. Four of five converted including Whittle and Nesbitt who are both yet to see any Varsity minutes.

“We all really knew who the right guys were and we trusted our coaches to make the right decision,” Overton said.

Arrison, who recently broke the school record for most shutouts, held his own in between the posts stopping two of the Hornets’ strikes; one of them came directly after nailing his opportunity in the top right corner; which ended up being the decider. These efforts were just enough to lift the warriors to their 4-3 victory.

“After last PK shootout, missing a pen and playing a big role in why we didn’t make the district finals, I felt like it was a need,” Arrison said. “I couldn’t miss back to back. So seeing that ball go in the net, I knew I was saving the next pen.”

The trust they had in their coach came with merit as he led them to a district 1 championship and the state quarterfinal stage a year prior. This time around, coach Wilson made the trek back to West Chester without setting a date for uniform return and looking ahead to Tuesday November 11 with a chance to advance to the state finals with a win over Parkland.
