Champions League Game Thread: Philadelphia Union 1 Atlanta United 1, Final (4-1 agg.)

Union come into the final leg of the Quarterfinals up by 3 goals

Game Updates

90+4 – The Union move on to the Semifinals! Even after the match Gabriel Heinze still having words with Jim Curtin on the sideline.

90’ – All that stands between the Union and the semifinals is 4 minutes.

89’ – After the goal we have Flach getting subbed out for McGlynn.

87’ – Burke wins a foot race down the far side and crosses it in to Przybylko who smashes in to the net! DOOP ties it at 1.

83’ – Play is stopped as Flach goes down after clearing a ball out of the penalty area. Trainers are out, as well as medical and a lot of water. Everyone clears off the pitch and play resumes.

79’ – Stupid move by Matt Real here, as he pushes Atlanta down and earns a Yellow Card. Him and Monteiro will not be available for the first leg of the semifinals IF the Union advance tonight.

78’ – Ref issues a nice warning to Blake about getting the game moving.

77’ – Atlanta making their first sub here Josef Martinez is off and Torres is on.

74’ – Late tackle by Mbaizo and he earns the third yellow card for the U this evening.

71’ – Bedoya picks up a second chance ball here and dribbles from the right side to the far side and sends it in for a deflected ball. Union earn a corner kick. The kick isn’t the best and Bedoya ends up getting a head on it and it hits the crossbar.

70’ – 20 minutes plus stoppage time left in the game and Santos’ night is done. Burke is coming in for him.

67’ – Union making the first move of the night. Jim Curtin sends in Matt Real for Fontana.

66’ – Wagner sends it long down the far side of the pitch to the feet of Przybylko. He tries to cut it and needs to recover. By this time the numbers for Atlanta caught up. However Bedoya is left free on the right side of the box and the play gets switched to him. A shot is taken and Guzan goes to the ground to cover the ball up.

61’ – Flach is taken down from behind and the ref issues Moreno a yellow card. Free kick is from just over the Union’s side of the halfway line.

58’ – Monteiro takes the free kick from the outside of the penalty box. Sends it in and Przybylko gets on the end of it and sends it towards the net. However it goes out wide for a corner kick. Monteiro send it to the near post, where a jumping Glesnes miss times the header and sends it over the cross bar.

50’ – Monteiro with a late tackle here earns a yellow card.

48’ – Sosa with a giveaway and the Union make the wrong decision here, as instead of going with the overlap its put too far infront of the other running player.

46’ – Second half gets underway at 9:10 pm. Union need to avoid letting two more goals into the net here.

45+2 – Flach is late on the attempt to stop the ball. Atlanta’s Santiago Sosa gets behind the defense and puts a shot behind a diving Blake. Atlanta is up 1-0 

45+1’ – Atlanta has another corner here and it leads to nothing. 

45’ – Three minutes of extra time for the first half.

42’ – Elliott with a little too much hand grabbing on defense, it earns him a yellow card. 

38’ – Wagner goes to take a shot at the top of the pitch and as he goes through the motion catches the leg of Atlanta’s player and goes down. Play is currently stopped as the training staff is on the field looking at Wagner. 

37’ – Mbaizo finds some space again and sends the ball towards the net. Where Guzan makes his third save of the night. 

32’ – We have yet another Union corner, but the U’s shots are blocked before reaching Guzan.

29’ – Mbaizo continues to play a major role here as he forces a goal kick for Philly. 

23’ – Atlanta finally getting something started and sends a dangerous cross into the box. However the U are able to clear it away.

19’ – The boys in blue are working the ball around from the left and right sides of the boxes. A few crosses but nothing comes out of it. 

18’ – Union ’s possession in this game already looking better than last game. 

6’ – A nice counter by the U here. Santos gets between and behind the defenders. However he pulls the shot and it goes out for a goal kick. Of the restart a high studs up foul by Elliott, no card issued.

3’ – Philly earns their first corner from the right flag. It is sent into the box and goes out for another corner. This time from the left (near) flag. The cross is headed easily into the hands of Atlanta’s goalkeeper Brad Guzan.

1’- Leg two is underway. Kickoff happened at 8:07 pm.
