Delaware and Temple handed first defeats of the season

A penalty kick save and two second half goals led Villanova to a 2-1 upset Sunday afternoon over No. 22 Delaware.

The loss was the first of the season for the Blue Hens, which had held opponents scoreless for more than 400 minutes to start the season.

Senior forward Padraic McCullaugh broke Delaware’s scoreless streak in the 47th minute on an unassisted goal and Philadelphia Union Academy grad Zach Zandi set up Miguel Polley with a cross for the eventual game-winner in the 62nd minute.

Guillermo Delgado scored his fourth goal of the season and 41st of his career less than two minutes in to stake the Blue Hens to the early lead off an assist from Dani Laguna. UD could have doubled the lead early in the second half when a penalty was awarded but Nova keeper Will Steiner denied Carlos Perales’ attempt.

Steiner, who was the hero in last Sunday’s upset over then-No. 11 Boston College, made seven saves in the game.

The win was the third straight for the Wildcats (3-2-0) after losing the first two matches of the season. Delaware fell to 4-1-0 after conceding their first goals in 452 minutes dating back to the Colonial Athletic Association championship last season.

Rider blanks Temple to hand the Owls their first loss of the season

Rider picked up their second win over a Philadelphia Soccer Six opponent on Saturday evening with a 2-0 win over Temple.

Rob Nardiello and Adrien Hess scored two goals six minutes apart in the second half and goalkeeper Ryan Baird stopped a penalty kick to lead the Broncs to the program’s first 4-0-0 start since 1940.

The Owls (4-1-0) outshot Rider 20-11 but Baird was up to the task, stopping Jorge Gomez Sanchez’s 67th minute penalty kick and six other shots for his third clean sheet of the season.

A crowd of just over 1,000 turned out for the Broncs home opener.

La Salle improves to 4-1 with win

New head coach Rob Irvine has the Explorers off to their best start since 2001 after a 3-0 win over Manhattan on Saturday.

Conor Nichols opened the scoring late in the first half and Haden Criollo and Johnny Ciarlante added second half goals to lead La Salle to victory.

Mike Kirk needed to make only one save to pick up his third clean sheet of the season while Matt Robinson collected his fifth assist of the season on the Criollo goal.

With the win, La Salle is just three wins shy of matching their win total from all of last season.

St. Joseph’s picks up first win, Penn leaves Omaha with one point

Junior midfielder Matt Crawford (Bensalem, Pa.) scored in the sixth minute off an assist from sophomore forward Derek MacKinnon (Washington Township, N.J.) and the defense did the rest to lead the Hawks to their first win of the season over Howard on Friday night.

Junior goalkeeper Greg O’Connell made four saves to record his first career shutout.

Penn returned home from a weekend trip to Omaha with a point after a 2-2 draw with Nebraska-Omaha on Sunday.

Matt Poplawski and Sam Wancowicz scored on each side of halftime for the Quakers (0-1-3) but the Mavericks canceled out both goals with equalizers in the 54th minute by Fazlo Alihodzic and the 79th minute by Zac Marquess.

The Marquess equalizer came seconds after Eric Swenson was sent off with a straight red card.

The Quakers lost to No. 14 Creighton 3-0 in the first game of their trip on Friday night.
