Fred Not Returning To MLS, Looking Towards Australia
Former Philadelphia Union midfielder Fred will not return to MLS this upcoming season, according to the player himself.
When asked about his future over Twitter, the Brazilian (with an US green card) was surprisingly open about his future in the world of professional soccer:
Since the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft, when Fred was taken by the New England Revolution, Fred has been in limbo. After not coming to terms with the Revolution on a new contract, the creative midfielder found himself without a home (the Revolution still hold his MLS rights).
In 2006-2007, Fred played in the Australian A-League and was named the league's Most Valuable Player. Appearing in 17 games for the Melbourne Victory, he scored four goals en route to Melbourne becoming the first team in the A-League's history to win a double (Premiership and cup).
In his time with the Union, Fred played in 25 games, scoring four goals and assisting on one. He became a fan favorite by the end of his time in Philadelphia.
