It may have been five summers since the last EURO tournament, but Europe’s top national competition is finally underway. For Philadelphia Union fans there is one team they will be paying close attention to, Hungary. That is because of one of the Union’s newest players Dániel Gazdag. The midfielder debuted for Hungary’s national team back in 2019. Since his first senior cap he has represented his country 6 times. For a breakdown of the three teams that Hungary will be facing in Group F, read Jonathan Abraham’s article.
However looking towards their Group stage matches, which kicks off Tuesday, it won’t be the easiest route to the knockout stages. Over seven days they will face Germany, France and Portugal. That means Hungary opens up the tournament against the defending champions. On Sunday it was announced Portugal’s defender Joao Cancelo was ruled out of the competition due to testing positive for Covid-19.
It isn’t all positive for Gazdag’s Hungary either, before the tournament it was announced Dominik Szoboszlai would miss the tournament. That is a huge blow as he was crucial in the team making the Euros. The 20-year-old was injured back in January and has been unable to fully recover from the groin injury.
