Late goal off corner lifts Rowan past Swarthmore in battle of ranked teams
In a back and forth battle between two of the best women’s programs in the area, Hannah Ferris had the last say with a well-taken header that gave a retooled Rowan squad a big early road win over a Swarthmore team that made it the Sweet 16 a year ago.
Following up on a 7-0 win to start the season at home last week, the Profs’ midfield was winning battles early, forcing turnovers and transition opportunities going the other way. Angela Oliveto was the beneficiary of one of those quick transitions after the ball was won in midfield and unleashed a blast from 30 yards out that Swarthmore keeper Paige Scheinberg couldn’t get to. The goal was the junior from Williamstown’s second of the season and 10th of her career.

The Garnet didn’t waste time finding a response though as Charlotte Carleton does what she does best in the box, using her strength to finish off a scrum in the box from a corner kick with an equalizing goal. With both teams settled into the game the match was what you would expect from teams ranked No. 13 (Swarthmore) and No. 18 (Rowan) in the latest poll.
The game appeared to be headed to a draw when Sara Wiedeman lined up her corner kick. The win for Rowan was their second straight over Swarthmore after the teams drew 1-1 in 2024. Rowan will be back in Pennsylvania today with a match at Penn State Brandywine while Swarthmore visits the always tough TCNJ team on Saturday. TCNJ is off to a 3-0 start having outscored opponents 13-2 in their first three matches.
