Trio of Union players earn weekly superlatives
Chris Pontius and Tranquillo Barnetta get Team of the Week nods while Roland Alberg is nominated for Goal of the Week.
The Philadelphia Union’s 4-0 win over the New England Revolution was remarkable, and Major League Soccer has taken notice. Three players have earned weekly superlatives thanks to their performances.
Tranquillo Barnetta and Chris Pontius were named to MLS’s Team of the Week. While he didn’t make it onto the scoresheet, Barnetta was instrumental in the Union’s success. On offense, he sent in the corner kick that Richie Marquez eventually scored on and connected on 36 of his 46 passes. On defense, Barnetta contributed with two tackles, three clearances, and eleven recoveries. Pontius added a goal and two key passes, also connecting on 34 of 36 passes.
Roland Alberg is up for AT&T Goal of the Week honors thanks to his backheel give-and-go with Charlie Davies. Alberg’s goal is currently paired against a strike by New York City FC’s David Villa.
While this week’s Save of the Week nominations haven’t been released yet, I’d expect to see Andre Blake nominated for the second straight week, as well.
