Temple tops Penn State on Gomez Sanchez goal

Jorge Gomez Sanchez scored with six minutes left to break a scoreless tie and lead Temple to their first road win over Penn State since 1989 on Tuesday night.

Gomez Sanchez’s strike from 20 yards off of an assist from Joonas Jokinen was his 10th of the season, which is second in the nation behind Buffalo’s Russell Cicerone, who has 11 goals.

Owls goalkeeper Alex Cagle made nine saves to record his fourth clean sheet of the season and his second straight in the fixture. Philadelphia Union Academy alum Connor Maloney had four of Penn State’s 11 shots in the game to lead the Nittany Lions (4-4-1).

With the win, Temple improved to 6-3-0 on the season ahead of their conference home opener on Saturday evening against Memphis.

Saint Joseph’s falls on the road

Filippo Ricupati scored in each half on goals that deflected off St. Joe’s defenders to lead St. John’s to a 2-0 road win over the Hawks on Tuesday night.

Ricupati snapped Saint Joseph’s 300-minute scoreless streak with a goal in the closing seconds of the first half and put the game out of reach in the 74th minute.

Greg O’Connell made five saves in the losing effort and the Hawks fell to 3-5-1 ahead of their Atlantic 10 opener at St. Bonaventure on Saturday.

Evan Vare lifts Lafayette to win; Lehigh shut out St. Francis

Freshman Evan Vare (Jamison, Pa.) put the Leopards back in the win column with a 53rd minute strike and Brian Ehrlich (Ambler, Pa.) made five saves to record a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over Fairleigh Dickinson.

Freshman goalkeeper Will Smith (Devon, Pa.) recorded his first college shutout and Danny Gonzalez (Berwyn, Pa.) scored in the 38th minute to lead the Mountain Hawks to victory.

Philadelphia Union Academy grad Doyle Tuvesson (Kennett Square, Pa.) was credited with an assist on the game-winner. Lehigh’s improved to 3-5-1.
