He started the season as a false 9 (striker) to cover for the injured Alan Pulido. He then moved to his usual position in one of Sporting’s two advance midfield spots (commonly referred to as an 8).

An extra five-game suspension is at the high end of what MLS tends to give for horror tackles. In recent years, they’ve tended to go for one- or two-game bans beyond the red card suspension itself, but dating back to 2011 they did ramp up bans in response to a spate of season-ending injuries on bad tackles.

The last time the two teams played each other, it was all Mexico in a 3-0 “friendly” win just a couple months after Mexico beat the USMNT in the 2019 Gold Cup final. It’s another final tomorrow.
