How to Watch: USMNT vs Mexico (CONCACAF Nations League Final)

Only one team can call themselves the first ever champion of our region’s newest international soccer tournament, CONCACAF Nations League. Sunday night will see a rivalry match between Mexico and the United States in the tournament’s finals. 

Out of the 70 times these two ‘major’ teams have met, Mexico has won just over 50 percent of the games with 36 wins. But fans will know that most of those wins came before the 2000’s, when the United States started to win most of the matches by a specific score of 2-0 inside one of the state’s only soccer stadiums at the time, Mapfre Stadium.

But out of the 13 matches these two teams played in the 2010’s, Mexico won 5 of them and the US won just 4. One of the biggest reasons the Yanks missed the 2018 FIFA World Cup would be because of their inability to get a result against El Tri in the Hex that year.

Since the 2-1 loss, Mexico has had the better hand in the rivalry matches. The Yanks only win one out the next four matches between the two sides, a friendly in Nashville back in 2018. In the last final the two teams meet in, 2019’s Gold Cup, Mexico would win with a 1-0 score. With that goal coming in at the 73rd minute by Jonathan dos Santos. 

Here we almost three years late, and it’s time for the Yanks to get back on shutting out Mexico from winning on US Soil. That 2016 qualifying tournament was the debut year for Christian Pulisic, a person who exploded with five goals in the qualifying round. That man just won the Champions League with his club team Chelsea. In net you have Zack Steffen, who plays under the guidance of Pep Guardiola and just won the Premiere League. 

Getting to this point was not the dominated performance these two teams usually show. The Yanks barely got into the final with an 89th minute goal from Theoson Siebatcheu. For El Tri, it took penalty kicks for them to move into the final. With a trophy on the line Sunday night, these two teams will sure draw numbers and are sure to put on a competitive match.
