El Brujo will now miss next two games, maybe more after red card against NYCFC

Jose Martinez was sent off in the 16th minute after a yellow card was turned red after video review

Jose Martinez won’t only be missing Tuesday’s Concacaf Champions League match; he’ll be out for next Saturday’s match in Chicago and possibly more after being sent off in the 16th minute against NYCFC on Saturday night.

Martinez was initially shown a yellow card when he clashed with NYCFC striker Taty Castellanos but after video review it was clear Martinez hit Castellanos in the face. Referee Ismail Elfath only needed one review of the video to change the card from yellow to red.

The question now with Martinez out for the second leg of the Champions League quarterfinal for yellow card accumulation is when he’ll be back in the lineup. He could get 2-3 additional games added to the suspension after the MLS Disciplinary Committee takes a look.

Head coach Jim Curtin will have a couple options to cover for Martinez in the match in Chester next Tuesday. When Martinez was out in the preseason he paired Jack Elliott and Alejandro Bedoya in a 4-2-3-1. Last season when he was out against Columbus Crew, Curtin started Elliott at the six.

Other options on the depth chart include Leon Flach and second-year player Cole Turner.
